The Grocer.
The anxiousness of death pulsing.
The atmosphere thick with all that is broken;
The realm of Life hidden in the fog.
Then like a beacon in the dark of night, a grocer.
His pace, steady like a heartbeat.
His movements gentle.
He did not rush when the world pushed.
He did not slacken either.
Steady like a heartbeat unaffected by the world.
Steadfast in the midst of the whirl,
He held the light that was my beacon Home,
And he didn’t even know… or maybe he did.
The gentleman bagging our groceries last night, truly preached a sermon to me without even speaking a word. He changed the entire atmosphere of the store. At first encounter, I felt like I should be doing something – keeping everything moving, you know? – but there was nothing for me to do except watch and learn and then give thanks for the steadfast grocer who would simply and resolutely stay focused on his task in the midst of an ever pushing world… he worked methodically and rhythmically – part of a greater melody. As I slowly embraced the moment and let go of my need to do whatever it was I thought I needed to be doing, an other-world hush filled the store. God is, in fact and reality, everywhere, and when we stay connected to the vine, our Life becomes a living testimony, no matter our job title. Thank you Lord for revealing more of You through a most humble vessel.
Let the world kick and scream, but steady like a heartbeat, remain in Him. Stick to the task at hand not allowing the world a say. I really want to be like that grocer.
