Day 1. God’s Goodness. How Deep the Love?
I’m not sure how many days this will take to walk through, but I only ask that if you are reading this series, that you start with day 1.
I recently read a series of George MacDonald sermons while pouring through the four Gospels. For a few years now, as I pursue Jesus with more fervor, I feel the revelation of His Character shifting some of my pre-conceived thoughts on God, one being His Goodness compared to our thoughts of goodness.
In one of the sermons, George MacDonald spoke of how the piece, way down deep in each one of us, created in God’s image, will never be smaller than our actions. Meaning God is always greater, so that we are not to throw out the Godly because of the ungodly actions – meaning we are to love others despite their actions. We can talk about Love later, for now I want to focus on God’s divine creation, which each one of us is part. A creation God Loves with a love that far surpasses our idea of love.
Today I have a real-life illustration that absolutely without a doubt proves the depth of our brokenness and lack of Real Love. We watched ‘DoLittle’ at the Fall Fest yesterday, (amazing afternoon and good story, the book is fantastic if you get a chance!) During the movie a squirrel is injured and is about to die – and the church was filled with ‘ahhhs’, no one wanted to see the cute squirrel die…. Understandable. However, there was also an evil character – angry, jealous, greedy (spoiler alert for the movie only) – at the end, he falls into a pit – not one person in the church made a sad sound. Everyone wanted to see the evil man die… also understandable… from our human perspective. But I don’t think God shares this perspective. When Peter, who knew Jesus personally, talks bout the end days this is what he says, “God isn’t late with His promise as some measure lateness. He is restraining himself on account of you, holding back the End because he doesn’t want anyone lost. He’s giving everyone space and time to change.” -2 Peter 3:9 (msg)
God doesn’t want to see anyone lost. Not anyone. And because He is God, I believe He has found a way to allow us the freedom to choose as well as saving us all. I believe there is a refining fire, to which all of us will feel the heat at varying degrees, but I believe He will save us all. We say we are just, but George MacDonald points out that you can’t have true justice without true love – hate and emotions will skew the justice. Our human justice is flawed. Thankfully we are not the judge!
There is so much more I want to share on this to more thoroughly explain how I find myself in this place, so I will continue the journey in my next post.
Please note, I’m not trying to convince you of anything – I pray each of us discovers Jesus for ourself, but I am eternally grateful for Mr. MacDonald who went into the poorhouse not backing down from revealing the depth of God’s Goodness and calling into question the depth of our human brokenness.
God Bless.
