The Heart of It.

John 4:13-18 Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks this water will get thirsty again and again. Anyone who drinks the water I give will never thirst—not ever. The water I give will be an artesian spring within, gushing fountains of endless life.”

The woman said, “Sir, give me this water so I won’t ever get thirsty, won’t ever have to come back to this well again!” He said, “Go call your husband and then come back.”

“I have no husband,” she said.

“That’s nicely put: ‘I have no husband.’ You’ve had five husbands, and the man you’re living with now isn’t even your husband. You spoke the truth there, sure enough.”

Jesus keeps trying to get at a man’s heart. “Jesus didn’t entrust his life to them. He knew them inside and out…” or “he knew what was in a man’s heart.” -John 2:24-25  There is something deeply disturbing about the human heart, and Jesus wants to open our eyes so we can see the need for a spiritual overhaul.

The Samaritan woman immediately sees the physical benefit of not having to come back to the well to draw water and says, “sign me up!” But Jesus gets right to the heart of the issue. “Go get your husband.” We are all, deep down, thirsting for Life… what we use to quench this thirst varies greatly… But unless we drink in Life… He who is Life, our thirst will never be quenched. Look at every life-sucking addiction out there, they rob us of life until we are but shells, empty and longing. Never satisfying. It’s like drinking pop after exercising… (or anytime :). Our body is thirsting and NEEDS water to replenish and nourish our bodies. Pop will not only make us sick, but it will never quench the thirst, only leave us wanting.

Here is Jesus offering us Living Water, a spiritual overhaul, so that we may no longer thirst. Praise God! It’s the only thing that will make verses 23-24 possible… to be ourselves, our true selves before Him… worshiping His Holy Name as Father, Creator, Protector, and Lover of our souls.

John 4:23-24 “It’s who you are and the way you live that count before God. Your worship must engage your spirit in the pursuit of truth. That’s the kind of people the Father is out looking for: those who are simply and honestly themselves before him in their worship. God is sheer being itself—Spirit. Those who worship him must do it out of their very being, their spirits, their true selves, in adoration.
