Moral Rot or Not?
Proverbs 28:2 When there is moral rot within a nation, its government topples easily.
There is a big difference between a bad spot on an apple and a rotten apple. A bad spot can simply be cut out – but rot means that the apple has gone bad and it would take a miracle to make it a good apple again.
In Proverbs, the author references ‘moral rot within a nation’. This is something that is making the WHOLE nation bad. John 2:23-25 During the time Jesus was in Jerusalem, those days of the Passover Feast, many people noticed the signs he was displaying and, seeing they pointed straight to God, entrusted their lives to him. But Jesus didn’t entrust his life to them. He knew them inside and out, knew how untrustworthy they were. He didn’t need any help in seeing right through them.
Without Jesus, we are not good. Yes, some people, by nature or nurture, lean to a more moral life than others — but comparing human hearts is like comparing rotten apples and saying just because one is less rotten that makes it ‘good’. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like the taste of an apple with a little rot; the rot permeates the whole apple making even the seemingly ‘good spots’ taste rotten. Nope, rot is rot.
As Jesus noted, the human heart is not to be trusted. This is why a new birth is necessary… John 1:13 They are reborn – not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God. This is why Jesus is necessary… John 15:5 The Light shines in the darkness and the darkness can never extinguish it. This is why Jesus is necessary always and in EVERYTHING. And I believe this is why we see so much division in the Church. We are so focused on ourselves, our agendas, social issues or social justice that we are missing the ONLY thing that matters. Being His. Uniting in being His.
I am going to answer a question that has been asked of me twice in the last year. So what about the social injustices, should we not fight against the evils of this world?
We are fighting the ultimate moral rot that is causing the social injustices when we look to Him. Anything short of that, as proven in the Old Testament over 4,000 years, only adds to the moral rot. We are not ‘good’ on our own. So if we really want to fight for Good, the Ultimate Good and Truth, we must abide in Him. John 1:5 Yes I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.
