The Driver’s Seat
Luke 9:23-25 “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat – I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self. What good would it do to get everything you want and lose you, the real you?”
“The difficulty is not so much in recognizing the truth of the proposition, but in doing what the truth demands.” -George MacDonald
Or in other words, seeing and understanding is not obeying.
So God wants the driver’s seat in our lives? And there, we will find our true self. Seems like a win-win. My mind says, ‘yes!’ I see the truth, yet when I still find myself worried about something or afraid, my heart is convicted – I am not giving up the driver’s seat. But, I imagine sometimes what that would be like – to let every injustice, doubt, worry, confusion, just roll past me, knowing a sovereign and loving God is in control… it is a Heavenly thought. I recognize the truth; Lord help me to obey… help me to give up the driver’s seat. Amen.
