Don’t Settle for Fun.
The very thing you want is the very thing He wants to give you. – George MacDonald
This is a truth that changed my life many years ago. First I started discovering just how beautiful Jesus Christ was and is and how He points so perfectly to our Heavenly Father… then, I slowly began to understand that those deep desires in my soul are connected to The Creator, by His design – and those desires can only be made complete by the Creator Himself. It will never work to fill it with anything else… no matter how hard we try and how much of our life we devote to trying.
Then, the beautiful cherry on top – once we take our focus off of ourselves and turn it to Him – He brings us fully alive in our passions and desires that He created us specially to do.
Quick note: I’m still on this journey – letting go of self and the world – but with every step closer to Him and every desire pulled away from self, I become a little more alive with His Spirit — revealing new life in me. Turns out He wants to fulfill my dreams (not my selfish dreams, but my deep yearnings) too – only He has the ability to dream so much bigger than I can imagine. I’m so thankful for His patience with me.
I just want us to consider one more thought that points to this idea of trusting the Creator with our lives so that we may discover something better than ourselves. Don’t settle for fun.
Did you have fun? Are you happy? I hear these questions all the time. It’s our culture’s standard of measurement of whether something is good or bad. Happy good! Sad bad. Fun good! Boring bad. We are selling our children an empty bag of tricks when ‘happy and fun’ become our goal for them.
Plus, it’s a ridiculously inaccurate measurement. I’m not saying something fun can’t be good – but so can boring… at least boring by this world’s standards. As a matter of fact, I would be willing to bet that most, if not all, life-giving activities that we do are not centered around flash, drama, and selfish desires of fun or even selfish desires in general. A few examples of advertised fun things that kill us? Sugar, alcohol, smart phones, social media (**teen suicide rates have greatly increased since smart phones and social media), and unhealthy foods are a couple big ones. Now, a few ‘boring’ things that bring life: nourishing music (listening and playing), reading (adventures of life and overcoming and believing in something bigger than yourself), adventuring in nature.
** From the CDC website. A recent report from the National Center for Health Statistics found that the suicide death rate among persons aged 10–24 increased 56% from 2007 through 2017.
My reason for drawing attention to this is John 10:10: The theif’s purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy. My purpose to is to give them a rich and satisfying life.
Satan hates you because God loves you.
Don’t settle for fun. There is something SOOOOO much better – There is someONE who loves you and will bring you new life that far exceeds self if you allow Him access to your life.
God loves you. I pray we open our hearts to the Lord today and discover a little more about Our Infinite Creator and His plans for us. Amen.
