Does speaking the truth make you right?
Excerpt from ‘The Tiger Rising’ by Kate DiCamillo:
Sistine put her hands on her hips. “You’re not saying what you believe,” she accused. “You’re not talking like a prophetess.”
“That’s ‘cause I ain’t no prophetess,” sail Willie May. “All I am is somebody speaking the truth. And the truth is: there ain’t nothing you can do for this tiger except let it be.”
“It’s not right,” said Sistine.
“Right ain’t got nothing to do with it,” muttered Willie May. “Sometimes right don’t count.”
The New Testament is filled with stories and examples of church leaders focused on being right and yet completely missing truth. They were so focused on the rules and doing what was ‘right’ they missed The Truth when He was standing right in front of them. It’s an interesting slip of words. We have have made the two words, right and truth, synonymous when they really are not.
Jesus said, “Because I am King, I was born and entered the world so that I could witness to the truth. Everyone who cares for truth, who has any feeling for the truth, recognizes my voice.”
Pilate said, “What is truth?” (John 19:37 – The Message)
(John 14:6 -The Message) Jesus said, “I am the Road, also the Truth, also the Life. No one gets to the Father apart from me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him. You’ve even seen him!”
Yet the world – consistently found Jesus not ‘right’… so not right that we crucified Him.
Truth is far deeper and bigger than being right. Truth is not using finite words in expressing the infinite – that is our human way of being right. Truth is. Just like God said, “I am.” Truth is not subjective. Truth is personified in Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “I am The Truth”… not “a truth”.
So while the world may not find the truth right, it doesn’t stop it from being truth.
May the Lord of all be your only guide. Thank you Jesus. Amen.
