Trust Falls.

1 Corinthians 7:29-31 (The Message) …so don’t complicate your lives unnecessarily. Keep it simple – in marriage, grief, joy, whatever. Even in ordinary things – your daily routines of shopping, and so on. Deal as sparingly as possible with the things of the world thrusts on you. This world as you see it is fading away.

1 Corinthians 8:3 (The Message) We never really know enough until we recognize that God alone knows it all.

And from George MacDonald’s ‘The Princess and the Goblin’, this dialogue takes place as the princess is speaking with the celestial great-grandmother whom her friend, Curdie, can’t see but the the princess can…

“And yet you won’t believe me, Curdie?” Expostulated the princess, now fairly crying with vexation, and sorrow at the gulf between her and Curdie.

“No. I can’t, and I can’t help it, “ said Curdie, turning to leave the room.

“What shall I do, grandmother?” Sobbed the princess, turning her face round upon the lady’s bosom, and shaking with suppressed sobs.

“You must give him time, “ said the grandmother; “and you must be content not to be believed for a while. It is very hard to bear; but I have had to bear it, and shall have to bear it many a time yet. I will take care of what Curdie thinks of you in the end. You must let him go now.”

(Curdie feels he has been ‘made a fool’ and leaves upset. The princess is devastated for she cares deeply for Curdie.)

“… I should have thought Curdie – “

“You are right. Curdie is much farther on than Lootie, and you will see what will come of it. But in the meantime, you must be content, I say, to be misunderstood for a while. We are all very anxious to be understood, and it is very hard not to be. But there is one thing much more necessary.”

“What is that, grandmother?”

“To understand other people.”

Can I get an Amen!?!?

Lord, may your Spirit fill us with a quiet contentment and peace that leads us closer to you, for Your Glory. Help us to let go of this world so that You may shine through us with a deeper understanding than we could ever imagine – trusting that you are truly Good and Your Love for us is true. Amen.

A little side not about trust falls; My first trust fall was off the steps of the now BCS steps. When I was a little girl at VBS, my group leader took us across the street from the church to the then senior citizen center steps (now BCS) and had us practice trust falls off the side. 30 years later, that school represents one of the greatest trust falls of my life. God is fun like that.
